China 2009 box office analysis

Since 2003, the Chinese film industry has been growing steadily with an astonishing rate of 25 % each year. Currently, China is one of the largest box office markets internationally. 2009 is a booming year for the Chinese film industry.  In 2009 the China box office also raised the box office growth up to 43%.  In 2009, as the world’s economy suffered a global downturn, China film market’s performance has proved right that movie business can benefit during times of recession.

The main reason behind the rapid growth is the increase of the country’s cinemas and screens and governmental support.  In many major Chinese cities, cinema-going has become a new lifestyle of the country’s burgeoning middle class.  As a result, the movie-going population has also largely increased.
Besides the growth in the exhibition sector, the industry has seen major increases in production, distribution and film financing.  With the expansion of the market and the influx of capital, the China film industry sees a bustling and prosperous year in 2009.

Box office

The 2009 China box office revenue reached RMB6.206bn, a 43% increase on the box office revenue in 2008, which was RMB4.341bn.  The result is seen as a nice surprise for the industry, which previously estimated that the revenue reach RMB5bn.  Looking ahead in 2010, the first two months of 2010 continue the strong performance in 2009.  EntGroup estimates that the 2010 China box office revenue will reach RMB10bn, and the revenue will reach RMB20bn, by the end of 2012.
In terms of box office takings of individual films, 2009 is also a record-breaking year.  The highest-grossing record in China was RMB360m, set by Titanic in 1998.  The 11-year record was broken in 2009 with three films each grossing more than RMB400m:  2012, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and local blockbuster The Founding of a Republic.  The three films, as well as 18 other films, that made more than RMB100m, have raised the bar for blockbusters in Chinese film market.
However, the box office takings are unevenly distributed with many blockbusters hits dominating the market, while only a few films reaching mid-sized box office gross (RMB50m to RMB100m).  The theatrical market is heavily dependent on blockbusters.
Production
In 2008 the total film production volume is 456 films, which is an increase of 56 films, or 12.3% increase on the production volume of 2008.  However, among the 456 films, only 130 films get to be released in movie theaters, means more than two thirds of them could not be released in cinemas.  The quantity of film production and the quality of films is still imbalanced.
Distribution
As the only two companies authorized to distribute foreign films, China Film Group and Huaxia Film Distribution remain two leading film distribution companies in China.  As China Film Group also co-owns two cinema circuits, its exhibition resources give China Film Group extra advantages, thus remaining the biggest distribution company in China, leading other companies by a large margin.  Huaxia Film Distributions stands second.
3D screening has become a major film distribution trend in 2009. Several Hollywood films were introduced to China in 3D screens only, and they have performed remarkably in box office takings.  China Film Digital, the company authorized to take charge of distribution of all 3D films, has made an impressive progress in its market share among all distribution companies.
Exhibition
In 2009, China adds 142 new cinemas and 626 screens to its exhibition sector of the industry, making a total of 1687 cinemas and 4723 screens.  Among the existing 26 cinema circuits, 14 circuits have grossed more than RMB100m ($14.64m) in 2009.

Over Heard 2--Number 1 this week, rising from number 2,-- brings in a decent $24.5  million over its 11 day run. As a Chinese film, the film didn't call in many fans as TF3 but remains to be most watched film in the top ten, even without having the 3D boost.
The Smurfs pulled in good numbers in its third week with $7.59 million, for a good accumulation of $34.11 million. Its poised to end its run with $49 million.
Newcomer Cars 2 pulled in a weak box office debut of only $6 million, weaker than that of The Smurfs; $14.4 million, it should end its run at $19 million. Its the highest-opening for the film in the series.
Fourth, Harry Potter 8 raked in $3.85 million this week to add to its good box office cume of $61 million. It should finish it's run with $66 million, marking the highest-grossing film in the series, the second highest- grossing american film of 2011, and the highest-grossing film for Warner Bros in China.
Transformers 3 passed the billion dollar line mark only because of China. Its by far the highest- grossing film of 2011, the highest-grossing film in the series(TF2 grossed $67.106548 million), and the second highest-grossing American film  behind Avatar's $200+ million gross. It also is the highest-grossing territory of TF3, grossing more than double its second highest-grossing territory--South Korea. It also had a powerful opening weekend of $54 million(31% of the total cume), claiming the highest-grossing opening weekend of all-time. Due to China and South Korea, it's foreign revenue now stands at $757 million. It should finish it's run at $178 million.
Sixth, Season of the Witch didn't bewitch many fans and opened to a poor $2.7 million.  It should finish at $8.8 million

Japan's box office analysis

After a long run of paramountcy from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in Japan for 4 weeks at no.1, it was finally dethroned by a Japanese title named Kamisama no karute with $3.9 million. Harry Potter's powerful run in Japan isn't stopping it, it still hit second with a 7th weekend result of $2.2 million, easing only 30% from last weekend which was provoked from increases due to Obon holidays. After 7 weeks of release in Japan, the Harry Potter finale has pulled in  a staggering $114,786,132, marking the highest-grossing film of 2011 while passing Pirates of the Caribbean 4's $108 million. It also has become the fourth highest-grossing film in the Harry Potter series which is ruled by Harry Potter and the the Sorcerer's Stone with $153 million. It is expected to pass Harry Potter 3's final Japanese box-office cume to gross around $124 million. Even with 3D and more theaters , Deathly Hallows- Part 2 is having a hard time passing the total revenue of the first film in the series which grossed a massive $152,993,493. Expect it to gross around $124.2 million

Falling 3rd, Kung Fu Panda 2, in its second weekend., holds  well with $1.8 million, but disappoints in box office cume($8,552,348). It should end its run with $16.6 million

Fourth, Transformers: Dark of the Moon rakes $1.7 million this weekend to add to its $48.6 million box office cume, which marks as the highest-grossing cume in the series by over $12 million. In Japan, 3D is very effective and allows a huge increase for the films as seen in the Transformers series. However, higher ticket inflation has a place in the increase of grosses over the years. Expect it to gross around $54 million.

Hurricane Irene didn't stymie the box office debuts immensely for this weekend, but some hold well. It is unequivocal that the East Coast business will be hurt due to the temporary closure of theaters in major places like New York and Philadelphia. Moviegoers are being kept at rest in there homes due to strong winds and the precarious weather. Distributors expect the overall box office to be down as much as 25 percent because of Irene, resulting in what might be the worst weekend of the year but it ended up the second slowest of the year behind  Super Bowl weekend (Feb. 4-6)

With $4.4 million on Friday and $14.3 million over the weekend, The Help kept its throne for the third week straight. It should pass the $100 million mark by Tuesday, and end its run with a decent $120 million.

On the other hand, Colombiana is the highest-grossing newcomer this weekend with a modest $3.75 million on Friday and $10.4 million over the weekend, improving on the $9.40 million weekend debut of Zoe Saldana's last action ensemble.   Distributor Sony Pictures' exit polling indicated that 57 percent of the audience was female while 65 percent was age 25 years and older.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark took in $8,689,317 over the infamous weekend of Irene.  The film hasn't been well recieved both by critics and movie-watchers with critics disparaging its lack of "skin-crawling chills."

Our Idiot Brother is the weakest of the newcomers with $7.0 million over the weekend, with a good 70% like rate and 66% approval rate, standing as the most well received major newcomer this weekend.
